The kidneys are one of the smallest and also one of the most important organs in our body. They perform vital functions that play a huge role in our overall health. On a daily basis, our kidneys filter around 120 liters of blood to produce around 2 liters of urine, filtering waste and extra fluid out of the body. Our kidneys can prevent the buildup of waste in the body, they keep our electrolyte levels stable, and make hormones that regulate blood pressure, make blood cells, and maintain strong bones. With the knowledge that our kidneys play a huge role in our wellbeing, it is of great importance that we protect them the best we can. There are many factors that can lead to kidney damage such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, glomerulonephritis, infections, kidney stones and side effects of some drugs.
Protecting and repairing the kidneys may lie in a common household item: baking soda.
The endocrine system produces enzymes to help us digest food into safer chemicals that the body can process. However, it is the pancreas that produces the majority of sodium bicarbonate that protects the kidneys during digestion. On occasions, our kidneys will produce additional amounts, depending on the type of food you eat.
If your diet consists of or is high on added sugar, fried foods, fatty foods and other unhealthy choices, the endocrine system can become stressed. In that case, both the pancreas and the kidneys will have a significant reduction in their ability to produce sodium bicarbonate and without sufficient production of sodium bicarbonate, the acids that are produced during digestion cannot be effectively neutralized, causing kidney damage.
In most treatments for kidney damage, sodium bicarbonate is one of the most common agents used. Dialysis basically boosts the levels of sodium bicarbonate in our body, because the kidneys are no longer able to produce it in order to process food and waste materials. Once the body is able to produce sufficient amounts of bicarbonate on its own, the life of the kidneys is extended, and the endocrine system can remain healthy.
The research showed that patients that were placed on this treatment showed greater nitrate oxide synthase, which is a process that balances the pH level of the blood.
Additional studies showed that daily sodium bicarbonate intake slows the progress of chronic kidney disease and prevents patients from having to undergo kidney dialysis. The findings show that sodium bicarbonate can prevent and even reverse the onset chronic kidney failure, and stop related diseases like heart disease and end-stage renal disease.
As with any other home treatment, before starting talk to your physician. Sodium bicarbonate is not toxic, but it can be quite difficult to digest for a sensitive stomach. Like we said, kidney damage can be caused by having an unhealthy lifestyle, so the best way to protect your kidneys is to maintain a healthy diet!
