Doctors around the world continue to work on finding drugs that can cure patients, especially those who are critical. The drug Chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine, is one of the solutions that has been tried in several countries because this virus has spread throughout the world, killing at least 11 thousand more on March 20.
Both of these drugs became rare in the United States this month because of news of their potential benefits against the corona virus. Plus, doctors in China, South Korea and France have reported that the drug seems to help fight the symptoms of the new Corona Virus.
In fact, this drug has not been involved in large-scale research that can prove the effectiveness of the work of this drug on a global scale. In addition, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not yet approved any drug for use in the treatment of the COVID-19.
Dr. Stephen M. Hahn, who was a Food and Drug Administration commissioner for only three months, did not immediately agree with President Trump’s statement before there was evidence on a large scale that the drug was safe to use on a global scale.
Nonetheless, doctors are free to use both drugs for the intended purpose. Therefore, this drug is in a period of large-scale clinical trials.
Results of laboratory studies
Some hospitals in the United States have started using the drug for Covid-19 patients, apparently because the drug is cheap and relatively safe. Laboratory studies have found that the drug can help prevent and limit infection by preventing the corona virus from invading cells.
However, not everyone can be given this drug. This drug is not safe for people who suffer from cardiac arrhythmias, or those who have kidney or liver disorders.
The University of Minnesota is also conducting research into the treatment of chloroquine hydroxides on Covid-19 patients to find out the truth of their benefits in preventing Covid-19 infections.
In addition, the drug Remdesivir, a drug to treat Ebola, is also still in clinical trials of the new corona virus and does not work well enough in dealing with this corona virus.
Hahn noted the importance of proving medicines to be safe and effective. “What is also important is not giving false hope, but giving hope,” he said.
Trump has previously made baseless predictions that the coronavirus epidemic will soon disappear. Then on Thursday (March 19), he appeared to register a malaria drug in the effort, even though Dr. Deborah Birx, coordinator of the White House’s coronavirus response, said the virus could re-emerge in the fall or winter of next year.
“If it works, your number (number of cases) will go down very fast,” Trump said. “So, we will see what happens, but there is a real chance that they (Chloroquine) might work.”
