The amazing benefits of Allicin

A recent research showed that garlic can be 100 times more potent than two popular antibiotics at fighting disease causing bacteria commonly responsible for food-borne illness.

When the garlic gets crushed, alliin becomes allicin. Studies have shown that allicin can help lower cholesterol and blood pressure and can also prevent blood clots. It can also reduce the risk of developing atherosclerosis.

Garlic can neutralize organisms, including bacteria and viruses that can cause earaches, colds and flu. Research shows that garlic can be effective against digestive ailments and diarrhea. Some recent studies are shown promising findings that garlic can be used for prevention of cancer.

Garlic as medicine

Garlic has a long and proud tradition as a medicine.

The Ancient Egyptians recommended it for 22 ailments. Even more, it is written that the laborers who built the pyramids ate it to increase their stamina and to keep them healthy.

The Ancient Greeks used it for almost any condition from curing flu, infections, and lung and blood disorders to healing insect bites and even treating leprosy.

The Romans fed it to soldiers and sailors to improve their endurance.

Last year, prominent nutrition scientists found that eating garlic can boost the number of T-cells in the bloodstream. These cells play a vital role in strengthening our immune systems and fighting viruses.

Allicin can also make our blood vessels dilate which can improve the blood flow and help tackle cardiovascular problems such as high cholesterol.

In 2007, dentists from Brazil found that gargling with garlic water can kill germs that are the main cause for tooth decay and gum disease.

Best way to prepare garlic

There are basically two schools of thought as to the best way of preparing garlic.

One team of scientists found that baked garlic releases its allicin-type compounds when you bake the cloves, while another team believes that peeling the garlic and letting it sit uncovered for 15 minutes produces the highest levels of compounds to fight infection.

You can peel half of the garlic cloves and roast the other half with the kitchen door tightly closed.

Due to the low price of garlic, there is a lack of researches on the benefits. However, the soup does wonders for you during the winter. Regular bowlfuls may very well keep away from colds, flu and other disease.
