Is Garlic Really That Healthy?

Everything starts with the history of some plants, but since the garlic itself is a very interesting topic, the topic is too big for all that. If you just know that old Roman writer Pliny described garlic as a medicine for 61 health problems, then we realize how important garlic was in that time. Unlike some cultures, garlic is known in almost all parts of the world and is used for treatment of rheumatism, asthma, scorpion strings, as a laxative, diuretic, while in England is celebrated as an aphrodisiac.

As garlic is interesting by itself and recorded in many historical records dating from the beginning of civilization, so it’s not surprising that is subject of various scientific researches. Garlic has a big role in preventive health, which would means that the inclusion of garlic in daily diet helps the body to resist certain diseases and changes in the body, eg cardiovascular disease, heart attack, etc.

Garlic contains allicin, a garlic ingredient that destroys bacteria and some diseases caused by fungi. Allicin is released when garlic is crushed or cut, but it loses of its aroma. In this way the garlic loses its antibacterial function, although it is still capable of helping our body in another therapeutic effect.

It is believed that garlic contains at least 15 different antioxidants that can neutralize the substances that destroy arteries. According to recent research, cooked garlic is as effective as raw. The same study showed improvement in general health, such as minor aches and joint pain in patients, lower asthma problems, increase strength, appetite, energy and libido.

Cholesterol is useful in one measure, in fact, our body produces it, but too much cholesterol has a link with the heart and blood vessels. If you want to lower your levels of cholesterol, be sure to consume garlic on daily basis. Three cloves of garlic every day can reduce cholesterol levels by 10-15%. It acts at high pressure so it will increase the urination, which affects the elasticity of blood vessels.

This benefit of consumption of garlic is associated only with the cardiovascular system, and we haven’t even mentioned its effect on the immune system, digestion, tumors etc.

The effect of garlic on the digestive system is positive in general, although most people believe the opposite. Garlic acts on the normalization of relations within the intestinal flora, helps with infectious diarrhea, acts on bile, promotes production and secretion of bile and can prevent damage and stomach ulcers.

Besides acting on our immunity and making it stronger, the garlic has ingredients that are carcinogenic enemies. It has been proved that the stomach cancer is less present in countries where the use of garlic is frequent.

Diseases attack us less if our immune system is all right and if our body is strong and healthy. Of course, garlic helps here also. As we know, the human organism is a complex system, so the garlic is a bacteria killer and viruses because it obviously has the ability to act on the development of resistance. So, if you feel that a cold or flu is coming for you, eat a few cloves of garlic.

There are things that are important to note when garlic is in question. Some people just react badly on garlic and its constituents. Approximately 5% of people were exposed to negative side effects on a recent research, such as troubles in urinating, bleeding hemorrhoids, irritability etc. In excessive amounts, garlic can be harmful for your kidneys and destroy blood cells. People taking anticoagulants and anemic people must consume garlic controlled. As garlic can cause an allergic reaction in some people, resulting in a rash, fever and headache, it is best to pre intensive use of garlic in your diet advice with your doctor.

The breath that is incredibly strong after consumption of garlic is something very debatable as well as the positive effects of the same. There are various recipes on how to neutralize the breath of garlic: strong coffee, honey, yogurt, milk, chewing parsley, cloves. How much garlic is effective and how expressed are its properties depends on where it is grown and the quality of the soil, but if you have the option to grow garlic in your garden – do it.

Still, it is better to use the garlic fresh rather than cooked, because fresh acts on the bacteria, and the immune system, cancer cells, while cooked doesn’t, but acts on cholesterol, blood, respiratory tract.
