In the USA, tilapia is a cheap and easy to get fish. Most of the time it is filleted, it is easy to cook and doesn’t leave a strange taste. However the fish you are getting is not wild and healthy, farm-bred fish have been found to have high concentrations of antibiotics and Genetically Modified Foods (GMO) Linked to Tumors, Allergies and Early Death. Despite all the studies showing that consuming this fish can be hazardous to our health, lately our market is full of farm-raised tilapia.
Wild tilapia mostly eats lake plants and algae.
However, the farms are using genetically modified food (soy pellets and/or corn) to fatten them up and higher doses of antibiotics to prevent them from getting sick or dying.
As a starting point we eat fish mostly because of the health benefits they provide like omega 3 acid and many others. But because of the poor and bad diet the omega 3 acid is almost absent.
Below we are about to present to you few reasons as why you should stay away from farm-raised tilapia.
Recent studies are showing that farm-raised tilapia can significantly increase inflammation. The studies are showing that consuming tilapia can make aggravate inflammation, especially targeting people with predisposition to asthma, arthritis and heart disease. While we think we are getting all the omega 3 fatty acids, we might be wrong. Studies are showing that farm-raised tilapia has rather higher chances of causing inflammation than bacon or hamburgers.
Cancer Causing Pollutants
Farmed fish are often exposed to 10 times more cancer causing organic pollutants in comparison to wild tilapia. The reason behind is most likely the feed since one of the ingredients of their diet is chicken poop. And yes, it is true and just that, other waste from domesticated animals tends to find its way on the diet.
Higher Pesticides and Antibiotics
Few researches are showing that farm-raised tilapia has higher levels of pesticides and antibiotics. To prevent them from getting sick or dying they are being administered higher doses of antibiotics. Furthermore to prevent sea lice they are being exposed to pesticide that are harmful to us. There are even some evidence that the pesticides are strong enough to kill salmon.
Low Omega-3 to Omega-6 Ratios
We like eating fish because they are a great source of omega 3 fatty acid. However, the omega 3 fatty acid in farm-raised tilapia is not that high in comparison to the wild tilapia. Since the fish are often caged, they are typically fattier and have a higher concentration of omega 6 fatty acids. When we consume too much omega 6 fatty acids, we are more prone to inflammation.
High Dioxin Levels
Farm-raised tilapia has higher dioxin levels than wild tilapia. In fact, they are 11 times the chance to have higher dioxins than wild tilapia. Dioxins are toxic and pretty dangerous and harmful for body and can even cause cancer. The biggest problem with them is that when they enter our body, it takes a longer period of time to get them out. For example the half-life of dioxin is 7-11 years.
Those are only few of the reasons to stay away from farm-raised tilapia. They might be cheaper, but they are far more dangerous to our body than the wild tilapia. Just as an advice you should really seek for a better and healthier fish or wild fish.
