In the USA, tilapia is a cheap and easy to get fish. Most of the time it is filleted, it is easy to cook and doesn’t leave a strange taste. We like eating fish because they are a great source of omega 3 fatty acid. However, the omega 3 fatty acid in farm-raised tilapia is not that high in comparison to the wild tilapia. Since the fish are often caged, they are typically fattier and have a higher concentration of omega 6 fatty acids. When we consume too much omega 6 fatty acids, we are more prone to inflammation.

High Dioxin Levels

Farm-raised tilapia has higher dioxin levels than wild tilapia. In fact, they are 11 times the chance to have higher dioxins than wild tilapia. Dioxins are toxic and pretty dangerous and harmful for body and can even cause cancer. The biggest problem with them is that when they enter our body, it takes a longer period of time to get them out. For example the half-life of dioxin is 7-11 years.

Those are only few of the reasons to stay away from farm-raised tilapia. They might be cheaper, but they are far more dangerous to our body than the wild tilapia. Just as an advice you should really seek for a better and healthier fish or wild fish.
