A healthy diet is essential for a happy life. A large amount of vegetables and fruits, unsaturated fatty acids and intact grains are few ingredients for every day consumption.
Of course you can sometimes enjoy the unhealthy snacks, but if you overboard to extent that is already bordering on compulsive, it is time to stop.
If you’re often tempted to eat some unhealthy snack, it is time to find out what is happening in your body when you eat unhealthy snacks.
In the first 5 seconds
In the moment when you consume deep-fried food your body faces a big task to digest and degrade all the ingredients. As you chew, the salivary glands begin to release enzymes that break down starch into simpler molecules, known as maltose.
Within a minute
Masticated food travels through the esophagus into the stomach. Snacks don’t contain essential nutrients (copper, zinc, magnesium) that help in digestion of food. The stomach will spend an average of 4 hours to degrade the fat and calories and prepare them for the next destination – small intestine. Your body directs towards the stomach even 20% more blood than usual in order to stimulate the digestion of food.
Within five minutes
Blood sugar levels are rapidly increasing. Stomach directs all the sugar to the small intestine. So the sucrose breaks down in glucose and fructose, which are absorbed through the wall of the small intestine. The body sends signals to the pancreas to release insulin, which directs the sugar to the cells.
You will probably feel an increased energy level. However, if you decide for intense physical activity, it is highly likely that you would feel exhausted because a large amount of blood is directed to the stomach.
The body begins to release hormones of happiness and well-being, such as endorphins and serotonin, which make you feel so pleased and happy.
Within an hour
Energy level begins to fall rapidly. The level of good chemicals (serotonin and endorphin) also begins to decrease, and your mood suffers. Then it comes to a new sense of desire for snacks to restore the sense of happiness and increased energy levels.
Within 4 hours
The stomach has ended with decomposition of fat and directs them to the small intestine. There they break down into smaller molecules and it comes to formation of fatty acids and cholesterol, which are placed in the liver, and then in the blood system. Fatty acids, such as omega-3 fatty acids are good for your heart, but those who are in unhealthy snacks are starting to settle on the walls of the arteries and block the flow of nutrients and oxygen.
Later in life
Daily consumption of unhealthy snacks will clog your arteries and increases the risk of getting cancer, type 2 diabetes, chronic inflammation in the body, heart disease, heart attack and stroke, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
